Demystifying Marketing – the Sampler Version
November 24, 2010
Do you get really excited when you think about being self-employed…
but then freeze up when you think about marketing?
Does marketing seem like a four-letter word to you?
Does it seem dishonest, manipulative, pushy, or oily?
Then we need to talk! That was me when I started my coaching career, and I still slide back into those thoughts and attitudes from time to time. When I train and coach and write about marketing, I bring this perspective with me to help marketing newbies find ways to get comfortable with marketing and choose marketing tactics that are authentic – that reflect who you really are and let you honor your values and keep your self-respect.
I compiled a collection of my marketing articles and released it as a fr*ee e-book – a “fr*ee-book” – with clear explanations of some marketing concepts and tactics and how small businesses can apply them. It’s called Demystifying Marketing: Easy Examples in Everyday Language (the Sampler Teaser Version).
To get a copy go to my Anything But Marketing! web site and sign up. You’ll get the fr*ee-book as a PDF you can read online or download to your computer so you can print it out or read it on the device of your choice, which can include an iPad or a Kindle. (Disclaimer: the fr*ee-book does not come with an iPad or Kindle, but if you have one, you can transfer it to the device and read it there.)
After you read the fr*ee-book come back to this post and leave your questions and comments. I’m eager to hear what you think and to find out what questions you have about learning the basics of marketing for newbies.
Let’s talk!

Re-Re-Re-Treat

Tomorrow I will be teaching people at the REFOCUS.REINVENT.REBUILD daylong retreat for people planning their lives as they leave middle adulthood. My friend and colleague Francie Cooper who is my co-host of the Tapa Palapa podcast invited me to present, and we’ve been referring to this workshop as the “Triple R Seminar” for a few weeks. Recently I’ve been thinking of it as the Re-Re-Re-Treat.
The theme of my talk is self-employment. My topic has to be focused because I don’t have the whole day, just a keynote presentation. I’ve got a small window of time to tell the attendees that the most exciting thing about a creative career is that it lets them align their work with who they really are. I have just a few minutes to say that self-employment lets them claim their own productivity and creativity, to “own” their personhood.
In that short time, can I get them to feel what I feel when I hear the Declaration of Independence? Read more

How’s the practice of gratitude going? I’m still fumbling along as a newbie. But I’m doing it.

Showtunes? Seriously?
November 13, 2010
I’m throwing out the blog post I was writing and starting over. In the spirit of the many posts I’ve seen on Twitter and Facebook recently by people struggling with commitments to writing, I want to be your rowdy role model. Once you give yourself permission to throw out writing that just doesn’t work, getting started gets a lot easier.
I can’t really get the lead-up story in place for some reason. So forget it. I’m going directly to the message.
