Steve’s Field Note
November 26, 2008
Tomorrow’s Thanksgiving, so it seems like a good day to be a real turkey. The Find Your True Calling study group met today and I wasn’t much help.
We had done an exercise suggested in an article by Barbara Winter to help us define the essence of the kind of work we want to do. My answer was fairly close to the mission statement I wrote.
The second exercise was recommended in an article by Barbara Sher. She asks workshop participants to imagine they have five lives to live and then decide what sort of work they would do in each. It’s a fun exercise, but for me there’s a huge distance between wide-open fantasy and what I will enjoy doing in the real world in the next few weeks to years. When other people shared their answers, I had very little to say. Dismally unhelpful, especially to Darcy, a creative and hip brainstormer who is extremely generous with her ideas.
We all have dud days; dud weeks, even. I’ve gotten enthused and then confused in rapid sequence lately, kind of like a rough-running engine that keeps backfiring. Some of that enthusiasm helped me shape my future career more than most exercises I’ve tried. Read about it in this week’s TRAVEL LOG.
Part of my ongoing confusion finally ended when I made – actually remade – a decision and acted on it. It prompted me to write an additional article this month for ANYTHING BUT MARKETING!
Remember that the main thing research has discovered about happiness is that gratitude is the key. The more we remember to be thankful and to practice acknowledging our gratitude, the more happiness we experience.
Enjoy the scenery On The Twisting Road!

TWISTING ROAD TRAVEL LOG
“Another Passion Test”
I think I found another good test to tell if something is more than an interest and possibly a passion. Two different people in the last couple of weeks had similar questions, and when I heard each of them… I got excited!

ANYTHING BUT MARKETING!
“Brilliant Advice, So I Finally Took It”
More than once I have advised a colleague or client to think about purpose before using a marketing technique. A couple of times I have even caught myself wrestling to learn how to use a marketing tool or medium before I have a clear idea why. I have written about using the guiding question, “To What End?” Now, finally, I applied this wonderful advice, made an important decision – one which I made before but then rescinded – and acted on it.
