Steve’s Field Note

January 24, 2009

Have you noticed how indecision can pile up like clean socks you don’t want to pair up, or the mail that’s not urgent, or clutter in the corner of that one room you use for things that don’t have an assigned place yet?

I have continued to post to my TRAVEL LOG blog and even continued the BURGER BITES series, though not on a tight schedule. But I have flopped miserably keeping the updates organized here.

I blame it on creative brainstorming! I canceled the autoresponder and plan to rely on people accessing posts by visiting the web site or using the RSS feed. But I confused myself by trying to figure out… if I expect people to keep up using the RSS feed, or hope they come back to the web site, how will I use this e-zine? Before, it was e-mailed to summarize my articles and encourage people to read them. What particular role will it have now?

I still don’t know, other than to say I will encourage people to visit this site regularly or sign up for its RSS feed, so those who aren’t as tech-savvy will have one central place for finding my information. All you techier-savvier folks can get RSS feed on the individual blog-zine categories.

RSS feed? What’s that? On the right side of this page there’s a column of categories. Under “Feed on RSS” click on “Posts Feed.” On that page there’s a column heading called “Actions.” Click on “Subscribe in Mail” and you will have new posts showing up in your e-mail program.

I’ve written many articles since my last update. I’ve included the introductions to the most recent ones below. I hope you find some of these ideas helpful to you as you figure out your own calling and bring your vision to life.

Enjoy the scenery On The Twisting Road!

TWISTING ROAD TRAVEL LOG

“Sustainability”

Since I have friends who read and think about and discuss sustainability in an environmental sense, I’ve started thinking about it in a business model sense. I ask questions about how long a business owner can maintain a business model without harming his or her personal or social environment. This is the idea of psychological sustainability or personal sustainability. A lot of “green” concepts can be applied to lifestyle choices, but be warned. I was certain I had put my laundry in the dryer last night and went to retrieve it this morning. It was sitting in the washer still damp. Turns out I had recycled an old memory of a previous time I dried my clothes!

“Sundance, MP3’s, and Corporate Art”

I recently took my sons to see The Day The Earth Stood Still. It was during my phase of “closing out 2008,” tying up the loose ends left dangling because we had Christmas celebrations early and were out of town from before Christmas until after New Year’s Day. We had been planning to see the movie over the Christmas holiday from school and were filled with anticipation by the time we saw it in early January. It disappointed me so much I wound up learning a lot.

“Bringing It Together”

I’m not sure how many people who follow this blog did not meet me through Changing Course. If you’re a Club member or on Valerie Young’s newsletter list, you already know about the Outside The Job Box Career Expert and Small Business Idea Consultant Self-Study Course. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, click that link…but maybe wait until you finish reading this post!

BURGER BITES

The Burger Bites Series Is Designed To Bring You A Taste Of Coaching.

“Burger Bites: Metaphor”

Coaching is driven towards clarity: clarity of understanding the parameters of a situation, clarity about long-term goals, and clarity about the plan to take steps towards the goals. Even when a coach helps a client consider lots of possibilities, the end target is the same. The coach is helping the client align mind (logic), heart (values and emotions), and spirit (deep beliefs and inner wisdom). Metaphors can bring these three areas together in one compelling picture.

“Burger Bites: Levels Of Listening”

A pretty common question from people who have never experienced coaching is: What does a coach do?

When I explain that coaches help people clarify their long-term goals, make plans, and take steps towards the goal, the deeper question comes up: How does a coach do that?

“Burger Bites: Brainstorming”

If you haven’t directly participated in a standard brainstorming session, you’ve probably seen one in a movie or television show. A group of people, usually in an organizational setting (like a corporation or non-profit agency) are encouraged to spout out ideas on how to solve a problem or address a challenge. “Don’t worry whether it’s a good idea or not, and don’t worry about sounding silly,” participants are encouraged. “We’ll just collect our ideas here and filter them next.” Sounds great in theory, but it usually sputters in practice. Fortunately, there’s a much better way.
