Steve’s Field Note
February 24, 2009
My not-quite-weekly newsletter has become more of a wannabe-weekly newsletter! This past month has been very busy for me, since I started studying Valerie Young’s “Outside The Job Box Creative Career Expert and Small Business Idea Consultant ©” Self-Study Course.
I am energized because Valerie is a brilliantly creative brainstormer who can come up with lots of ways for people to use their interests and unique talents to earn an income. I also like the fact that it’s a balance to coaching. A coach follows the client’s agenda and helps the client figure things out. A brainstorming consultant starts with the understanding the client wants a lot of ideas and suggestions, so we’re expected to give advice and possibilities.
People tend to leave the brainstorming consultation a little overwhelmed by all the ideas. That creates the opportunity for me to follow up with ongoing coaching to help them sort out which ideas they want to pursue and what steps to start taking. It’s a wonderful intersection of two things I love, creative brainstorming and attentive listening.
When I finish the current section I move on to suggestions for web site design. Maybe, just maybe, I will finally pick a template and get hosting for my Discovery Lookout site. But I might have a few more corners to round before I get there.
Enjoy the scenery On The Twisting Road!

TWISTING ROAD TRAVEL LOG
A very long weekend kept me from posting. It started Friday, which was my birthday. I took off in the middle of the day to see Slumdog Millionaire. What a fantastic gift that was! Saturday was a family dinner and celebration, and then Sunday was the Super Bowl. I’ll leave it to the sports bloggers to figure out reasons the referees were so eager to hand the game to the Steelers. The core mission of refereeing is fairness! I have to keep off that topic or I’ll be ranting for weeks. Instead, I want to rant a little about the reason I’m just now able to write my post at midnight on Monday.

It really shouldn’t be such a dilemma. People seem to create an e-mail signature line with a closing that suits them and that’s it. Some are creative, some are routine, some are friendly and warm, and others are austere. But most people seem to choose and be done. I had chosen, and everything was fine, until a story my son told me kept popping into my head.

I’m not a huge fan of Suze Orman, but overall I usually have positive vibes for her. That’s why I was watching her show on CNBC Saturday night. I know the show is structured around the contrived drama of Ms. Orman berating people for doing stupid things with their money. But this was different. She actually said, “Now is not the time to follow your dreams.”

BURGER BITES
The Burger Bites Series Is Designed To Bring You A Taste Of Coaching.
“Burger Bites: Accountability”
How ironic that accountability is next on my list of topics to describe coaching. I have a plan to post two “Burger Bites” articles per month, one in the first half and one in the second. It’s near the end of the month and I have yet to post the first one! What would have happened if I had talked about this goal while I was being coached?

ANYTHING BUT MARKETING!
“How About Something You Don’t Need Or Want?”
My birthday was just a few weeks back. I don’t make a big deal of my birthday – in fact, I don’t make a big deal of anybody’s birthday unless I’m reminded that it really matters to that person. But it’s heartwarming to get cards and e-mail or text messages from people I know. As an ongoing student of marketing and networking, I find it instructive to get messages from people who only know me as a prospect or new networking contact. And I find it intriguing to get messages from businesses where I am a customer, especially from a business that goes all-out to acknowledge birthdays but fails to deliver in their stores.
